RYA Adult Learn to Sail October Course

Course overview

There are four options available

The RYA Adult Dinghy Levels 1 and 2 are combined as a five day course. Progress quickly from beginner to a competent sailor in light winds, in a controlled, safe and enjoyable environment. Each level can also be completed separately over a number of sessions or three days.

Level 2 - Basic Skills

A three day course provisionally Mon-Weds but dependent on interest this might be negotiable. Build your confidence and develop your skills. By the end of this course you'll be a competent sailor in light winds.

Seamanship


A three day course provisionally Mon-Weds but dependent on interest this might be negotiable. Learn to sail in adverse conditions (broken centreboard, rudderless), anchor, refine sailing skills and plan a day voyage

Adult Members £210, Adult Non-members £285

Course pre-requisites

None

Course duration

5 days or equivalent number of sessions for the combined Level 1 + 2 course

3 days for level 2 alone or seamanship.

Minimum age

None (although under 16s may prefer to learn through the Youth Sailing Scheme)

Content

Rigging, launching and building confidence sailing in all directions. Capsize recovery and essential safety knowledge.

Qualification gained on successful completion

Able to sail confidently on all points of sail and make decisions in good conditions.
The successful candidate is awarded RYA Dinghy Levels 1 and 2 certificates.
The Level 2 certificate allows members to borrow dinghies at Notts County Sailing Club.

Seamanship certificate - improve your sailing skills.

Format

Predominantly afloat but with some classroom elements.

What's included

  • Use of boats, training materials and equipment.
  • Course handbook, certificate and syllabus/logbook.

What you should bring

  • Depending on the time of year, the Galley may be open for the purchase of breakfast, lunch and hot and cold drinks. If it will not be, you will be advised in advance so that you can bring your own food. Hot water will always be available.
  • If you already have a syllabus/logbook, please bring it with you, including any certificates attached inside.
  • What should I wear?
    • Buoyancy aid of correct specification e.g. adult 50N (one will be provided if you do not have your own)
    • Correct seasonal wetsuit or drysuit
    • For inclement weather, a waterproof outer spray top or coat and base layers are recommended
    • Appropriate enclosed footwear, i.e. wetsuit boots or trainers that can get wet
    • Appropriate seasonal hat
    • Gloves - sailing or thin gardening gloves
    • Swimming costume and towel
    • Sunscreen
    • Water bottle
    • Change(s) of clothing

The RYA Adult Dinghy Level 2 Basic Skills course enables you to progress quickly from beginner to a competent sailor in light winds, in a controlled, safe and enjoyable environment.

Please ensure that you have completed Level 1 or have sailing skills to the same standard.

RYA Adult Dinghy Level 3 Course Fee £185.00

The RYA Adult Dinghy Level 3 Better Sailing course aims to improve your sailing, consolidating skills learned in levels 1 and 2 and introduces short taster sessions from the advanced modules such as Day Sailing and Seamanship skills.

Please ensure that you have completed Level 2 or have sailing skills to the same standard.
