RYA Start Windsurfing Instructor Course

Course overview

Training in teaching techniques afloat and ashore.
Run by an RYA Coach/Assessor and moderated on the final day by another RYA Coach/Assessor who has not been involved in the candidate's training.
Candidates will be required to demonstrate competence in course preparation, delivery and management, as well as customer liaison.

Intermediate non-planing certificate with beach starting and non-planing gybe clinics
First aid certificate
RYA Powerboat Level 2
RYA Safe and Fun certificate and pre-course work
Health declaration form or medical questionnaire

None

Course duration

Normally a 50 hour/5 day week. The final day will be moderated by an external trainer who will assess candidates.

Minimum age

16

Qualified to teach

  • Start Windsurfing Course, Youth Windsurfing Scheme Stages 1 and 2.

Instructors are not assessed as competent in running a training centre, and should always work under the supervision of an RYA Senior instructor.

Validity

Five years from the date of issue, provided that a valid first aid certificate is maintained.

What's included

  • Use of boats, boards, training materials and equipment.
  • Course handbook, certificate and syllabus/logbook.
  • Exam fees and certificates.

You will need to bring

  • Depending on the time of year, the Galley may be open for the purchase of breakfast, lunch and hot and cold drinks. If it will not be, you will be advised in advance so that you can bring your own food. Hot water will always be available.
  • If you already have a syllabus/logbook, please bring it with you, including any certificates attached inside.
  • What should I wear?
    • Buoyancy aid of correct specification e.g. adult 50N (one will be provided if you do not have your own)
    • Correct seasonal wetsuit or drysuit
    • For inclement weather, a waterproof outer spray top or coat and base layers are recommended
    • Appropriate enclosed footwear, i.e. wetsuit boots or trainers that can get wet
    • Appropriate seasonal hat and gloves
    • Swimming costume and towel
    • Sunscreen
    • Water bottle
    • Change(s) of clothing
