Course overview

Perfect for racing at club level! The RYA Dinghy Club Racing course helps youths and adults improve their racing technique and knowledge for racing at club level, building on boat handling and speed, as well as starting to build the knowledge required to develop a strategy based on the conditions. You'll look at improving upwind efficiency, downwind tactics, rules around the course and start line acceleration.

Course pre-requisites

RYA Start Racing or to the level of; some club race experience.

Course duration

2 days or equivalent number of sessions

Minimum age

8 years

Content

A course designed to build on current basic racing skills, helping to improve the key principles of line bias and the first beat; stopping and hovering; roll tacks and gybes; adapting the rig and sail settings; racing rules for fleet racing and strategy planning.

Qualification gained on successful completion

Evidence of improvement of core racing skills reflecting in the enjoyment in a club racing environment in a range of conditions. Able to create a strategy for a race course. Increased confidence in the rules for racing. A greater understanding of what makes tacks, gybes and race starts efficient.

The successful candidate is awarded RYA Club Racing certificate.

Format

Predominantly afloat but with some classroom elements.

What you should bring

  • If you already have a syllabus/logbook, please bring it with you, including any certificates attached inside.
  • For our intermediate (Stage 3 and 4) and advanced courses, we like you to use your own Topper if you have one. Please make sure that your boat is rigged and ready in time for the start of the course. If you need to borrow a club boat, please let us know.
  • Suggested kit list:
    • Buoyancy aid of correct specification (one will be provided if you do not have your own)
    • Correct seasonal wetsuit or drysuit
    • For inclement weather, a waterproof outer spray top or coat, trousers and base layers are recommended
    • Appropriate enclosed footwear, i.e. wetsuit boots or trainers that can get wet. Crocs and open-toed shoes aren't suitable for sailing.
    • Appropriate seasonal hat
    • Gloves - sailing or thin gardening gloves
    • Swimming costume and towel
    • Sunscreen
    • Water bottle
    • Change(s) of clothing
