Course overview
The RYA Powerboat Instructor course trains you in the various techniques and teaching methods required to instruct the RYA Level 1 Start Powerboating and RYA Level 2 Powerboat Handling syllabus and is run by an RYA Powerboat Trainer. Participants will practise running a number of sessions to develop personal skills and teaching ability.

Course pre-requisites
Candidates must attend a skills assessment prior to their instructor training course.
First aid certificate
RYA Powerboat Level 2
Health declaration form or medical questionnaire
Experience
Five seasons experience of powerboating logged (preferably in range of boat types and sizes) OR one season for those who use powerboats as an integral part of their normal full-time occupation.
Course duration
3 days or equivalent number of sessions, plus additional 1 day pre-assessment
Minimum age
16
Qualification gained on successful completion
RYA Powerboat InstructorAbility to teach up to and including Powerboat Level 2 under the supervision of the Principal or Chief Instructor. If you hold the Safety Boat Certificate, you may also teach the RYA Safety Boat Course.
Format
Predominantly practical but with some classroom elements.

What's included
Use of boats, equipment.
Types of boats used: "planing" boats, i.e. RIBS, Pioneers and Rigiflex i.e. boats that lift up and move across, rather than through the water when at speed, and powered by outboard engines.
Exam fees and certificates.
What you should bring
Depending on the time of year, the Galley may be open for the purchase of breakfast, lunch and hot and cold drinks. If it will not be, you will be advised in advance so that you can bring your own food. Hot water will always be available.
Passport sized photograph.
Kit list
- Correct seasonal clothing e.g. layers.
- Buoyancy aid of correct specification e.g. adult 50N (one will be provided if you do not have your own)
- Appropriate enclosed footwear
- Additional warm clothing
- Waterproof outer spray top or coat
- Swimming costume and towel
- Sunscreen
- Water bottle
- Appropriate hat for the weather
- Gloves for warmth is required
- Change(s) of clothing
